This basement shower started as an old, dated stall. We took it out completely and rebuilt it from the slab up, paying close attention to the waterproofing layers that keep a below-grade shower dry for years.
Before

Demolition and Drain Rough-In
We removed the old stall, opened up the area and cut into the floor to rough in a new shower drain.

Framing and Shower Pan
Next came new framing with a recessed niche, a sloped mortar bed so water runs to the drain, and a waterproof membrane over the pan.

Cement Board and Waterproofing
Cement board went up on the walls and around the niche, then every surface was coated with a waterproofing membrane before any tile was set.

The Almost Finished Shower
Large marble-look tile, a recessed niche and a sliding glass door give this basement a bathroom that feels like it belongs on the main floor.
